In the recent times, availability of safe food has been a cause of concern to all the consumers all over the world. There is a growing demand for clean and safe food, (especially zero chemical residues in the food).The contribution of Sikkim state towards this Organic Journey is well recognized. Among the torch bearers from Sikkim, SIMFED’s contribution is significant in this direction.

SIMFED is an Apex Marketing Co-operative Society under the Govt. of Sikkim, established in the year 1983 under Co-operative Societies Act of 1978 and Sikkim Co-operative Societies Rule of 1981 with the mandate of undertaking wholesale supply of consumer goods to the Multi-Purpose Cooperative Societies (MPCS), Consumer Cooperative Societies (CCS) and to arrange for bulk marketing of the surplus Agricultural produce including important cash crops of the state.

The Aims & Objectives of SIMFED

  1. To arrange for the sale and purchase of agricultural produce and other allied products for the members of the affiliated societies and other members to their best advantage.

  2. To arrange the supply of Agricultural Inputs such as seed, fertilizer, etc. as required by the farmers.

  3. To act on behalf of the State Government as an agent for receiving, stocking and selling of bio-fertilizer dispatched to the State Government account from the Central Pool.

  4. To carry on trading in agricultural produce and other essential commodities as an agent of the State Government and distribution of controlled non-controlled commodities procured from outside the state in suitable circumstances or on behalf of the Affiliated Societies and other Cooperatives.

  5. To transact business with non-members as it may be conducive to the promotion of the economic interest of members under conditions as may be directed upon from time to time by the Board of Directors by a resolution in writing provided that the Registrar does not direct otherwise.

  6. To undertake procurement, processing, grading and marketing of agricultural produce, also fruits and vegetables as and when necessary. Establish and run manufacturing and processing units for the production of consumer goods in collaboration with other co-operative or directly by itself.

  7. To encourage general thrift, self-help and cooperation among the members.

  8. Promotion and development of organic farming on pan India basis.

Business of SIMFED

SIMFED is involved in a whole range of activities associated with production, certification and marketing of organically grown produce as per details given below:

  1. Implementation of Organic Farming projects in different states.

  2. Acting as Regional Council (PAN India) for rendering certification services under PGS India / PKVY.

  3. Procurement and Marketing of Agricultural and Horticultural produce including organic produce.

  4. Involvement in contract farming in farmer groups with technical support.

  5. Procurement and supply of seeds, bio-fertilizer, agricultural tools and implements, organic manures and bio-pesticides.

  6. Procurement and supply of all consumer items, construction materials, office stationeries, furniture, computers, etc.

  7. Supply of various miscellaneous items required by the Govt. Departments.

  8. Development of retail market chain.

Promotion & Implementation of Organic Farming

SIMFED is involved in Promotion & Development of Organic farming sector, for more than ten years, SIMFED at present is working with over 70,000 farmers covering nearly 67,690 hectares area in 16 states of India namely Sikkim, Assam, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Goa, Lakshadweep, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand and Delhi under different schemes of GOI / State Governments. The promotion and development of organic farming is a holistic and a bit lengthy process spread over a period of three years during which continuous awareness is created to enable the farmers to meet the well-defined requirements of cultivation / production and certification process with the help of videos, leaflets, demonstrations, pamphlets, etc. Extensive Orientation meetings are carried out in the project areas, the trainers are selected and their skills are sharpened through extensive technically focused trainings. The farmers are given trainings on various methods and methodologies of Organic farming.

Field Work and Association with Stake Holders

Realizing the lack of awareness about the specific scientific practices of adopting organic farming systems, SIMFED ventures into series of activities at the field level including hand holding of farmers for Adoption of Organic Farming practices and certification in association with the various state governments (through sponsored schemes). SIMFED works with farmers to reverse declining farm productivity by developing sustainable farming systems, based on principles of organic agriculture. Organic farming systems have been found to be particularly suitable for small and marginal farmers since they rely on local resources.

Marketing of Brand “SIMFED”

SIMFED has initiated measures to facilitate marketing of organic produce of the farmers / growers covered under the projects awarded to SIMFED by State Govts. Through various means which include launching of “Brand SIMFED” in 2017 and establishing of marketing retail outlets, appointment of distributors, SIMFED retail shops, etc.

The Brand SIMFED was launched at a standout event at Hotel “The Ashok”, 50-B, Diplomatic Enclave, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi on November 08, 2017 in the presence of Mr. Somnath Poudyal, Honorable Food Safety & Agriculture Minister, Government of Sikkim as a Special Guest.

Presently SIMFED is selling more than 150 organic products that are grown and sourced locally, regionally and nationally through marketing channels established across the country. The vast range of products include Unpolished Rice, Organic Flours, Organic Cereals, Unpolished pulses, Spices (Whole, Powdered), Cold pressed oils, Cow ghee and Honey. These are made available in different packaging of 250 grams, 500 grams and 1 kg. The specialty products from Sikkim include organically grown Buck Wheat flour, Dale Chili (Cherry Pepper), Large Cardamom, Black Rice, Ginger, Turmeric, Pineapple, Kiwi and Mandarin Oranges, etc.

The Other Specialty products are Cashew and Mango from Andhra Pradesh, King Chilli, Joha and Black Rice from Assam; Pineapple from North East Region; Kodo from Chhattisgarh; Lemon from Chhattisgarh and Assam; Potato from Gujarat and Mandarin Orange from Assam. In the forthcoming days, SIMFED will be exploring the export market for various products like Niger, Ginger, Turmeric, Black Pepper and Potato from different regions of the country.

Marketing Facilitation

SIMFED is organizing Buyer- Sellers meets in different states to bring together all stakeholders such as farmers, farmer producer organizations (FPO)/ Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), NGOs, extensionists, traders, processors and researchers for conducting business transactions and develop good rapport. The effort is to facilitate procurement of produce directly from the field of the farmers or their bodies such as FPOs to reduce / eliminate inter mediators and to ensures better returns to the organic farmers as also making quality products available to the consumers that too at reasonable price.

Important Achievements of SIMFED in the past years

Adoption, ICS management and certification of organic farming under NPOP in 11 states, the recent one being Goa and Uttrakhand.

Adoption and PGS India certification of organic farming under PGS India as per PKVY norms in 2,752 Clusters covering an area of nearly 55,040 Ha.

SIMFED is authorized Regional Council (PGS/E (S1)-1480) with the validity up to 9th January 2022. Currently SIMFED RC is rendering certification services to 1918 clusters spread in 9 states.

Formation of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) / Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs)/ Mission Organic value Chain Development (MOVCD) in NE Regions covering states of Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh.

Marketing of organic produce in domestic as well as export market.

Participating in almost all national and international repute Organic Melas, expo and other such events around the Country.

Organized buyer and seller meet at different levels and ensure participation of all stake holders.

Established of marketing chain of over 100 retail outlets, distributors for brand SIMFED.

Established quality control cum pack house at New Delhi.

Expansion of organic farming promotion and development work for the farmers particularly women farmers covered under State Rural Livelihood Missions (SLRMs). SIMFED has signed memorandum of understanding with Jharkhand State Livelihoods promotion Society (JSLPS), Dept. of Rural Development, and Govt. of Jharkhand for providing assistance in organic clusters Development & Participatory Guarantee Scheme (PGS) for 100 Clusters formed by JSLPS in various districts of the state.

SIMFED is in the process of finalizing similar projects with other state Rural Livelihood Missions (SRLMs) in many other states including U.P., Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Established an exclusive Organic Retail Shop in the premises of Krishi Bhawan New Delhi.

A “Mobile Vegetable Vans” was introduced at Gangtok (Sikkim State) and Guwahati (Assam State) to sell Organic Vegetables in the state of Sikkim. Established 25 organic outlets in the state.

Different events organized by SIMFED in various state were also covered by print as well as electronic media from time to time. 

SIMFED has also been awarded with World Bank Assisted “Assam Agri-business and Rural Transformation Project (APART)” for establishment of Common Service Centers (CSCs) through formation of 30 Farmer Producer Organization (FPOs)/ Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) in zone -11 spread over in five districts of Assam state. The project has been assigned by ARIAS society, an autonomous body, Govt. of Assam. The duration of project is 3 years. M/s CTRAN, a Bhubaneswar base consulting company is a Joint Venture partner in the project.
